Many telephone companies (and other marketing organisations) are making telephone directories available on the Internet, this page lists those which are most likely to be of use.
Unless otherwise noted, the sites listed here are useable in both the local language and English.
To find external numbers in the UK you can try either BT's PhoneNetUK Directory Enquiries (Residential and Business) or, for business numbers only, the Yellow Pages Search
Business and Residential numbers can be found in the France Telecom Directories.
The DeTeMedien Directories provide both Residential and Business searches - you may find the "Telephone Book" slightly easier to use than "Yellow Pages".
Business numbers can be located using the Kompass Directory.
The KPN Telecom site also includes both Residential and Business numbers, but is entirely in Dutch. However, users who can't read Dutch should be able to get results by entering the company name or person's surname in ' naam', the city or district in ' plaats' and clicking the ' Zoek' button.
Spanish Business numbers can be found in the Telefónica Directory, and you can search for residential numbers on their 'White' pages site. Although all in Spanish, non-Spanish speakers (or readers!) should be able to get some results by entering the required company name in ' Nombre o Razón Social ' and the city or district name in ' Localidad' - you may get more accurate results if you also click the ' Localidades ' button which will further refine the city in ' Localidad' to a specific ' Provincia'. Click the red magnifying glass button to perform the search.

There are a number of sites which claim to cover larger geographical areas, but these tend to be much less complete than the country-specific directories - and are often a lot slower.
So far the only site which gives anything approaching a useful service is the EuroPages Business Directory.
