Located in a valley meadow on the outskirts of Shirenewton, The Valley Chapel
was built in 1791 and is recorded as the oldest Methodist Chapel in Wales.
The founder of the chapel, Miss Anne Lewis, was so inspired by
John Wesley
(the founder of Methodism) when he visited the area preaching the Gospel that she held meetings in her cottage. Through her determination and the enthusiasm of the local people the Valley Chapel was built. She died in 1832 and his buried close to the chapel door. Her descendents still visit the chapel.
The Chapel has been preserved and maintained with normal repairs and without alteration to its character. The original stone floor remains and the old wall paraffin lamps are still in place. In 1956, electricity was installed, which greatly improved the lighting and heating. Earlswood Valley Chapel remains a place of worship where baptisms, weddings and funerals take place in this peaceful corner of Monmouthshire.
